Iran\u2019s supreme leader on Sunday likened recent anti-government protests to a \u201ccoup\u201d, warning that any US attack on the Islamic Republic following Washington\u2019s military deployments<\/a> in the Middle East would trigger a regional war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian authorities\u2019 response<\/a> to the protests sparked threats of intervention from US President Donald Trump, who dispatched an aircraft carrier group to the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war,\u201d Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, telling Iranians they \u201cshould not be scared\u201d of Trump\u2019s rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The demonstrations in Iran began as an expression of discontent at the high cost of living, but grew into a mass anti-government movement that the country\u2019s leaders have described as \u201criots\u201d fomented by the United States and Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey (rioters) attacked the police, government centres, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps centres, banks, and mosques, and burned the Quran \u2026 It was like a coup,\u201d Khamenei said, adding that \u201cthe coup was suppressed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran has acknowledged more than 3,000 deaths during the protests, but insists that most were members of the security forces and innocent bystanders, attributing the violence to \u201cterrorist acts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups and foreign governments, however, have accused Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of carrying out a crackdown that killed thousands of protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The response prompted the European Union to list the IRGC as a terrorist organisation<\/a>, with Iranian lawmakers retaliating on Sunday by slapping the same designation on European armies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers wore the green uniform of the Guards in a display of solidarity at the legislative session, where they chanted \u201cDeath to America\u201d, \u201cDeath to Israel\u201d, and \u201cShame on you, Europe\u201d, state television footage showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slamming the bloc\u2019s \u201cirresponsible action\u201d, speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said<\/a> that under \u201cArticle 7 of the Law on Countermeasures Against the Declaration of the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, the armies of European countries are considered terrorist groups\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It remained unclear what immediate impact the decision would have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law was first passed in 2019, when the United States classified the Guards as a terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday\u2019s session was held on the 47th anniversary of the return from exile of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guards are the ideological arm of Iran\u2019s military, tasked with safeguarding the Islamic revolution from external and internal threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union agreed on Thursday to list the Guards as a \u201cterrorist organisation\u201d over the response to the protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The step matched similar classifications enacted by the United States, Canada and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghalibaf said the decision had \u201caccelerated Europe\u2019s path to becoming irrelevant in the future world order\u201d, adding it had only increased domestic support for the Guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Threats and dialogue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Iran and the United States have been trading warnings and threats of potential military action, even as their leaders appear to leave the door open for negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firouzeh, a 43-year-old homemaker who declined to give her full name, said the recent tensions had left her \u201cvery worried and scared\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLately, all I do is watch the news until I fall asleep. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to check the updates.\u201d IRGC official Ahmad Vahidi was quoted by the Mehr<\/em> news agency as saying \u201cenemies\u201d sought to create a \u201cwar atmosphere\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is part of their psychological operations. Therefore, we should not fall into this trap,\u201d Vahidi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ultra-conservative Kayhan<\/em> daily ran the headline \u201cWest Asia, Iran\u2019s home and America\u2019s graveyard\u201d, while Mehr<\/em> said several thousand graves in Tehran were ready to receive the remains of American soldiers if the United States attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Ali Larijani, head of Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council, said on Saturday: \u201cContrary to the hype of the contrived media war, structural arrangements for negotiations are progressing.\u201d Trump also confirmed that dialogue was taking place, but without withdrawing his earlier threats, adding, \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US president previously said he believed Iran would make a deal over its nuclear and missile programmes rather than face military action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran, meanwhile, has said it is ready for nuclear talks if its missile and defence capabilities are not on the agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Saturday that \u201ca war would be in the interest of neither Iran, nor the United States, nor the region\u201d, during a call with his Egyptian counterpart, according to his office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qatari premier Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who also serves as foreign minister, held talks in Iran on Saturday to try to \u201cde-escalate tensions\u201d, the kingdom\u2019s foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
