{"id":1746,"date":"2026-01-31T08:57:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T08:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thefridaynews.com\/?p=1746"},"modified":"2026-01-31T08:57:51","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T08:57:51","slug":"imran-khans-eye-procedure-completed-smoothly-says-pims-executive-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefridaynews.com\/?p=1746","title":{"rendered":"Imran Khan\u2019s Eye Procedure Completed Smoothly, Says Pims Executive Director"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), Professor Dr Rana Imran Sikander, revealed early on Saturday that the eye procedure of incarcerated former premier Imran Khan was completed \u201csmoothly\u201d and that he remained \u201cstable\u201d during the intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video statement by the hospital\u2019s head comes after the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969894\">PTI approached<\/a>&nbsp;the Supreme Court on Friday, seeking its assistance in arranging a meeting between the PTI founder and his personal physicians, with the help of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information Minister Attaullah Tarar had earlier confirmed that Imran&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969478#:~:text=Claims%20about%20treatment%20at%20Pims\"><u>underwent<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a \u201c20-minute\u201d medical procedure for an eye ailment on the night of January 24 at Pims in Islamabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt (the procedure) was completed smoothly in approximately 20 minutes. During the treatment, the patient remained vitally stable and was discharged with routine post-procedure care instructions and follow-up advice and documents,\u201d said Sikander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doctor said the former premier, aged 74, complained of \u201creduced vision in his right eye\u201d, adding that a \u201cqualified ophthalmologist\u201d from the hospital conducted a \u201ccomplete eye assessment at Adiala jail\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sikander elaborated that the doctor dispatched to the prison conducted \u201cstrict lab examination, [ocular] endoscopy, intraocular pressure measurement, essential laboratory tests and OCT of the retina\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that based on the initial assessment, the diagnosis of right central vein occlusion was made and a hospital-based treatment was recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, Mr Niazi was brought to Pims on the night of last Saturday, Sunday for the advised procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The head of the hospital said Imran, after arrival at Pims, was \u201cexplained in full\u201d about the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInformed consent was obtained from the patient prior to the procedure. The procedure was carried out in the operation theatre under standard sterile protocol and monitoring,\u201d said Dr Sikander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1970095\/imrans-procedure-completed-smoothly-vitals-remained-stable-pims-executive-director#imrans-eye-condition-and-secret-transfer-to-pims\"><\/a>Imran\u2019s eye condition and \u2018secret transfer\u2019 to Pims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 28, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969364\"><u>PTI&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>had raised concerns about Imran\u2019s health, saying it had learned through credible reports that he had been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, which could cause permanent eyesight damage if not treated promptly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party had alleged that the jail administration was insisting that the treatment be provided inside the prison, contrary to a medical expert\u2019s advice to take him to a hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969478#:~:text=Claims%20about%20treatment%20at%20Pims\">report<\/a>, quoting a senior doctor at Pims, said Imran was brought to the hospital under strict security on the night of January 24 for a medical procedure, which was \u201ccompleted when the time reached in the A.M.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doctor said there was \u201cextraordinary movement\u201d on Saturday night, and the operation theatres and the anaesthesia room were cordoned off ahead of Imran\u2019s arrival at Pims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, the information minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969716\">confirmed<\/a>&nbsp;that the PTI founder underwent a medical procedure for an eye ailment at Pims on the night of January 24. He said it was a \u201c20-minute\u201d procedure and that the ex-premier was \u201cabsolutely healthy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, the PTI&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969716#:~:text=PTI%20condemns%20Imran%E2%80%99s%20%E2%80%98secret%20transfer%E2%80%99\">condemned<\/a>&nbsp;the act of \u201csecretly transferring\u201d Imran to Pims, deliberately keeping his family and the party leadership uninformed, and denying him access to personal physicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) also termed Imran\u2019s transfer to the hospital without the knowledge of his family and personal physicians a \u201ccriminal negligence\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imran\u2019s sister, Noreen Niazi, who had earlier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969364#:~:text=Imran%E2%80%99s%20sisters%20question%20reports%20about%20his%20ailment\">raised doubts<\/a>&nbsp;about his brother\u2019s ailment,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969716#:~:text=Imran%E2%80%99s%20sister%20demands%20his%20medical%20reports%20be%20made%20public\">reiterated concerns<\/a>&nbsp;that his family and lawyers were not being kept informed and demanded that his medical reports be made public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then on Friday, the PTI staged a day-long protest outside the Supreme Court, following which it said the ex-premier\u2019s family would be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1969894\">provided<\/a>&nbsp;a copy of his medical report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), Professor Dr Rana Imran Sikander, revealed early<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1747,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1746","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","category-newsbeat"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
