WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday once again credited<\/a> Field Marshal Asim Munir for helping prevent a nuclear conflict<\/a> with India, adding that he persuaded both sides to back down by linking peace to trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining how he helped defuse tensions across the globe \u2014 from Ukr\u00ad\u00adaine to Serbia \u2014 Trump said \u201cthe most impo\u00adr\u00ad\u00adtant\u201d of these conflicts was last month\u2019s war scare between India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that was not whether or not they may someday have nukes, like we are talking about the Middle East, like we are talking about with Israel and Iran. This is \u2014 they have nuclear weapons,\u201d President Trump said at his news conference in The Hague, at the conclusion of a Nato summit.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to recent tensions between the two South Asian neighbours, Trump said, \u201cI ended that with a series of phone calls on trade. I said, \u2018Look, if you are going to be fighting each other\u2026\u2019 It was getting very bad \u2014 you know how bad that last attack was. It was very bad. If you are really going to go fighting with each other, we are not going to do any trade.\u2019 They said, \u2018No, no. No, you have to do a trade deal\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described a conversation with Pakistan\u2019s army chief and praised him in personal terms: \u201cIn fact, I had the general \u2014 he was really very impressive \u2014 the general from Pakistan was in my office last week. You know Prime Minister Modi is a great friend of mine. He is a great gentleman. He is a great man. And I got them to reason. I said, \u2018We are not doing any trade deal if you are going to be fighting. And if you are going to be fighting each other, we are not doing any trade deal\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump concluded, \u201cAnd you know what? They said, \u2018No, I want to do a trade deal.\u2019 And we stopped the nuclear war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remarks highlighted the key role played by Field Marshal Munir in easing regional tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Trump did not name the general directly in his public remarks, he had earlier described Munir as \u201can exceptional human being and an inspiring personality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These statements stand in contrast to India\u2019s official position, which maintains that New Delhi acted<\/a> independently during the May crisis and that Washington did not mediate. Trump\u2019s remarks support Pakistan\u2019s view that quiet US diplomacy \u2014 and direct intervention from the White House \u2014 helped calm tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In broader comments during the Nato summit, Trump also said, \u201cThe Pakistanis know Iran very well, better than most. But they are not happy.\u201d While brief, the comment underscored Washington\u2019s view of Pakistan as a key regional player, especially as the US explores reopening talks with Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
